Joyce was born in Glasgow, Scotland and graduated from prestigious Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama with a dual degree-B.A. in Vocal (opera) and Piano Performance. She went on to obtain a Diploma in Secondary Music Education from St. Andrew’s College of Education, also in Scotland. At the RSAMD her minor was languages and Joyce speaks and sings in a number of different languages.
In 1988 she moved to San Francisco, CA where she established herself as a very popular teacher of Piano, Voice and Composition. Joyce relocated to Oakland where she continues to teach, perform, and compose. She has been a Board Member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland and continues to lend advice and support to its music programs.
As a composer and singer Joyce began writing cabaret/jazz songs in the early 90’s and several instrumental pieces for piano ranging from a Scottish Rhapsody to a Space Fantasia for the New Millennium. In 2004 Joyce composed the music for “Casino!”, a musical comedy about Oakland politics which was produced twice locally, in 2004 and 2005.
Her other major creations include a short modern opera based on Italian-Scottish themes, “Il Giocatore” (aka “The Golf Opera”), that débuted at the Julia Morgan Theatre in 2000, and earned her the epithet, the Celtic Puccini.
As a highly trained singer and classical musician, Joyce has a unique set of talents with which she creates beautiful melodies for the singers and weaves them together with classical and ethnic threads drawn from diverse musical cultures.
In 2003 she was commissioned to compose and perform a children’s “Saturn Symphony” for the planetarium at Oakland’s Chabot Space and Science Center. In 2004 she composed Chinese music for Chabot’s “Dragon Skies” exhibition and planetarium show. For the planetarium show about Chinese Imperial Astronomy her soundtrack was a unique blend she characterized as “East meets West, in Space”.
For the Oakland Chamber of Commerce’s Centennial Musical 2005 Gala Joyce created a full evening of music and musicians reflecting Oakland’s history and ethnic diversity. Joyce composed original music, collaborated with several local writers producing a song from each decade representing historic events and important people from Oakland’s history. The Chambers Gala is Joyce’s second celebration of the beauty and people of Oakland, “Casino!” being the first.
Her Oakland songs continue to be performed at the Oakland Heritage Alliance 25th Anniversary in May, 2006.
Currently Joyce is working on Chabot’s 2006 “Solar System” planetarium show where she is composing and producing a soundtrack.
